Alison McCandless is a Durham-based fiber artist who began A Knitted ART in 2005. She creates beautiful, hand-knit baby hats using natural and organic yarns, as well as hats and accessories for women in luxury fibers such as baby alpaca, bamboo and merino wool. Each A Knitted Art piece is knit by McCandless, who takes great pride in creating lasting heirlooms and unique wearable art. She buys most of her yarns from local shops.
Her statement felted bowler hats are first hand knit, then felted through a multi-step process before being individually shaped. Each is embellished with a vintage pin collected from small shops during her travels, which include the SoWA Vintage Market in Boston, MA.
She is well-known for her charming berry hats. Strawberries, blueberries, pumpkins, acorns and raspberries are among the most popular. The flower hat, an original design, is her personal favorite. She sizes her hats generously so they may be “loved” as long as possible.
McCandless exhibits throughout the state and enjoys sharing her love of “knitted art” with her customers.
